Your 3 Day Isle of Skye Itinerary

This small group tour departs from Edinburgh and explores some of Scotland’s most iconic landscapes—taking in lochs, glens, castles, and the rugged beauty of the Isle of Skye. Here's a clear day-by-day breakdown of where you’ll go and what you’ll see.

Day 1: Edinburgh ➝ Loch Lomond ➝ Glencoe ➝ Glenfinnan ➝ Isle of Skye

  • Depart Edinburgh in the morning and head northwest towards the Highlands.

  • First stop is Loch Lomond, the largest lake in Scotland and a gateway to the Highlands.

  • Continue through Rannoch Moor and into Glencoe, a dramatic valley shaped by volcanic activity and glacial erosion.

  • Travel west to the Glenfinnan Viaduct, made famous by the Harry Potter films and overlooking Loch Shiel and the Glenfinnan Monument.

  • Drive through the scenic Road to the Isles before crossing the bridge to the Isle of Skye in the evening.

  • Overnight at Portree on Skye.

Day 2: Full Day Exploring the Isle of Skye

  • Begin the day exploring the Trotternish Peninsula, starting with a walk to the Old Man of Storr.

  • Stop at Kilt Rock and Mealt Falls, where a dramatic cliffside waterfall plunges into the sea.

  • Visit Duntulm Castle, the ruins of a former stronghold of the Clan MacDonald, perched above the sea cliffs.

  • Explore the village of Uig and head across to the west of the island.

  • Stop at Dunvegan Castle, the ancestral home of the Clan MacLeod (entry optional).

  • Return to your accommodation for the evening.

Day 3: Isle of Skye ➝ Eilean Donan Castle ➝ Loch Ness ➝ Cairngorms ➝ Edinburgh

  • Leave Skye and make the first stop of the day at Eilean Donan Castle, one of Scotland’s most photographed landmarks.

  • Continue through the Highlands towards Loch Ness, with time for a short break and a chance to scan the loch for the elusive Nessie.

  • Journey through the Cairngorms National Park, passing through mountain and forest scenery.

  • Return to Edinburgh in the evening, arriving around 7–8 pm.

Why Chose to Travel with Experience Scotland’s Wild

There are tours… and then there are tours. You know what I mean—those experiences that feel personal, where your guide doesn’t just reel off facts but shares stories, local legends, and even recommends the best whisky to sip while watching the sunset.

That’s exactly what you get with Experience Scotland’s Wild. Their groups are small (just 8 people max), which makes all the difference.

It’s intimate, relaxed, and feels more like travelling with friends than following a flag through the Highlands. And with nearly 10 years of guiding under their belt, these folks know how to do it right.

They’re also about to celebrate their 10th birthday, which I think says a lot. In a country where every corner has a story, it helps to have someone who’s been listening for a while.
