The History & Crest of Clan MacDonald
Clan MacDonald, also known as Clan Donald, is a proud and ancient Scottish Highland clan with a rich history. They were the largest and most powerful clan in Scotland, with extensive lands in the Highlands. The clan has several branches, including the MacDonalds of Sleat and the MacDonalds of Clanranald, each with its own unique history and traditions.
For centuries, the MacDonalds held the title of Lord of the Isles, a position of great power and influence along the west coast of Scotland. However, their power was eventually challenged by the Scottish monarchy, and the title and territory were taken away by James IV.
The clan motto of Clan MacDonald is "Per mare per terras" which means "By sea and by land." This motto reflects the clan's strength and versatility, as they were not only skilled warriors but also successful seafarers.
