Why Travel To Scotland? 5 Reasons You Should Visit

For some reason or another Scotland has come up on your radar as a holiday destination.

But why travel to Scotland?

What can you even do there?

Why should you give up your precious vacation time to visit this small and out of the way place?

Well, as an avid traveller who’s seen a lot of the world and come back to stay in Scotland, I’ll attempt to answer those questions and inspire you to pack your bags with a longing to see the staggering mountains of Glen Coe, the expanses of Rannoch Moor and the history behind every castle wall.

Scotland managed to steal my heart and it’s a place I’ll gladly rave about to the world, so let’s get stuck right into the 5 reasons you should visit Scotland.

  1. Isolation/Escape the Crowds/Peace

One thing that I hear from travellers (especially hikers) again and again, is that the peace and solitude found in Scotland is the main reason they keep coming back.

We’re a country of just 6 million people and the further into the highlands you go, the less other people you’ll find.

Sure enough, this isn’t everyones cup of tea but for a world that is becoming more and more busy, flustered and crowded - I find it’s a breath of relief to be amidst the glorious expanse of the highlands with just those closest to me around.

2. Castles/History/Time-Travel

Who alive doesn’t know of the many incredible fortresses found in Scotland? We boast over 2,000 castles, ruins and fortresses around the country and each has a story to tell.

Scotland’s history is long, dense and absolutely action-packed. Coming to Scotland includes travelling back in

time. Hear stories of conquest, feuds, revenge, betrayal and triumph while walking right where it all happened. Scotland is a place where history feels so close and so real, it’s a place where you can really connect with the past and perhaps gain insight about the present as a result.

3. Wildlife/Coos/Nature at its Finest

What’s Scotland without a lovely ginger coo that’s somehow simultaneously adorable and terrifying. Not to worry, they don’t attack people unless you really get up in their faces - be warned - and they are the most lovely of creatures. But they are not all there is to see throughout the lowlands, highlands and islands!

As I’ve written about extensively on our website, Scotland hosts a wide variety of beautiful creatures both big and small. From the puffins on Barra to the eagles in the Cairngorms, from the dolphins & whales off Mull to the red deer of Glen Coe, we have a lot of cool animals to go see.

Of course where to find these animals but in the wonderful Nature we have in Scotland! Never have I seen a place as green and vibrant as my home country and I do believe you’ll agree.

4. Just Absolutely Beautiful

Right, so in case you didn't know, Scotland is incredibly beautiful all year round. Currently, it is autumn and the trees are alight with colour which, to me, matches the countryside perfectly.

It’s just the most picturesque place I can think of. When you come to Scotland, every turn in the road leads to another incredible view - driving up through Glen Coe will stay with you forever and I’ve heard of more than one traveller reduced to tears.

It’s a place that brings the world ‘awe’ to its fully meaning. It fills you with that feelings and will take away the words to describe it all.

5. The People

No list would be complete without mentioning the people of Scotland - the Scots. We’ve not always had it easy throughout history, in fact we’ve been the underdogs for a long time. Somehow though, the people of Scotland are welcoming, genuine and good-humoured.

You may not always be able to understand us but you will be made to feel at home in our wonderful country!

Now I’ve stuck to 5 reasons but the list goes on… there’s our whisky, our ceilidhs (Scottish dances), our tartans, the clans - names of which have travelled the world over! There’s the highland games, the streets of Edinburgh, the churches and cathedrals and many, many more that you’ll have to come discover for yourself.

I hope now you’re convinced to come to Scotland - if you do, you’ll have the most incredible time.
