So whether you have an adventure already booked, or you’re just thinking about it, here is everything you need to know about them.

What are they?

The Outer Hebrides is a chain of more than 100 islands in Scotland, only 70 however are inhabited, with the main ones visited including Lewis, Harris, Uist, and Barra. Also known as the Western Isles, this beautiful area of the world spans over 15o miles, and is separated from the mainland and Inner Hebrides by bodies of water known as the Minch and the ‘Little' Minch.

The Outer Hebrides are rich in geological wonders, history and culture - and are believed to be the heartland of the Gaelic language.

How do you get there?

Getting to the Outer Hebrides is part of the adventure, and there is actually a few different ways to do it! You can get to the western isles by ferry or air, and both have amazing views of the islands. Ferries depart from many different parts of the mainland, with the main routes being Oban - Barra, and Ullapool - Stornoway, and you can get onboard with your car, bike, or just on foot also. Flights from many of the mainland cites come into Stornoway, Barra and Benbecula too! We reccomend booking all transport well in advance, particularly during peak seasons.

Top Tip: If possible, we really recommend having your car or hiring one on arrival, this is a great way to get around the islands and make the most of your exploring! There is public transport available, but this gives you a bit more flexibility!

What’s the accommodation like?

There is a whole range of accommodation available on the outer Hebrides. From the bigger towns such as Stornoway, to the more remote areas in Harris and Uist, there are so many places to stay.

Deepening on what your style is, the Hebrides have a lot to offer. With plenty of nice hotels, guest houses, camping, unique bothies and glamping pods - you definitely won’t be stuck! These can fill up fast during the holiday months, so we do recommend booking in advance though, just to make sure!

What should you do?

There is a whole lot of things to do on a trip to the Outer Hebrides! If you have the time, we recommend travelling through the main chain, all the way from the top of Lewis to Barra (or vice versa!) where you can experience the brilliant range of activities, sites and scenery that these islands have to offer. With a lot of great walks and hiking trails, you’ll probably spend most of your time here outdoors!

If you’re looking for historic sites to visit, our top choices include the Clannish Standing Stones, located on the west coast of Lewis, Dun Carloway Broch, Kisimul Castle in Barra, and the Gearrannan Blackhouse Village.

For some of the best views and scenery in the Hebrides, you should visit the Butt of Lewis, Luskentyre Beach in Harris, Traigh Shiar in Vatersay, and the Mangestra Sea Stacks. It is also worth spending some time watching the planes land on the beach at Barra airport, a very unique and exciting experience!

If you want a break from adventuring the great outdoors, there is also a lot of great local distilleries and restaurants for you to visit on your trip too. From the Isle of Harris distillery, North Uist distillery, the Am Politician in Eriskay, you won’t be lost for a wee dram and bite to eat!
