A Beginners Guide to Scottish Island Hopping: Outer Hebrides Edition

Scotlands Outer Hebrides are home to some of the worlds most picturesque landscapes and beaches (yes, you might even get them confused with the Caribbean or Thailand!), so getting yourself across to explore this collection of fascinating islands is definitely one for the Scottish bucket list - and what better way to do that, than to island hop!

Where are the Outer Hebrides?

Made up of 70 islands, the Outer Hebrides are situated off the north west coast of Scotland, and are reachable by ferry or flight.

We know that making the journey up can be a long one, and possibly a once in a lifetime trip, so it’s important you make the most of your adventure and carefully plan it so you don’t leave feeling like you’ve missed something

What is Island Hopping?

A very popular way of covering Hebridean ground efficiently, as well as having a whole lot of fun, is to travel from island to island during the one trip, also known as ‘Island hopping’. This can be a cost efficient, flexible and adventurous way to see multiple places on your trip to the islands. Island hopping in the Hebrides is done via the ferry routes, and as experienced hoppers, we have just the route for you!

How to begin?

Firstly you will need to decide where you want to begin your island hop adventure. There are a couple of ways to start this trip, but we recommend starting in Oban, and taking the ferry over to the Island of Barra (Castlebay) to work your way up the islands.

You can also work your way down if you prefer, and start by taking the ferry from Ullapool to the Isle of Lewis (Stornoway).

We suggest pre-booking accommodation before setting off, especially during holiday season, there is a great range of hotels, B&B’s and campsites available across the islands.

This trip will allow you to visit many breathtaking islands in one go, and have the chance to experience life in the gorgeous Western Isles, but as always, be prepared for the Scottish weather, and make sure you pack for all conditions.

Our 7 Day Island Hop Plan

Day 1

Begin the adventure in Oban, and set off on the ferry to Castlebay, located on the stunning Isle of Barra. Once you are there you can view Kisimul Castle, follow many of the walking routes around the island, and take a look in the Barra distillery.

Day 2

Spend the morning exploring beaches of Barra, and take the very scenic drive down to Vatersay, another tranquil spot with glorious views. Later in the day, you can head up to the top of the island and take the ferry across to Eriskay, where you can enjoy dinner and a whisky in ‘Am Politician’, look out for the ponies, and watch the sunset on the beach

Isle of Vatersay

Day 3

Begin the drive over to South Uist, making sure to take in the scenery and stopping whenever you like for photos and views. You should also pop into local shops such as the Hebridean Jewellery shop and cafe, and if you’re up for it, take on one of the hill walks such as Beinn Mhor.

Day 4

Continue up through South Uist, and cross into North Uist. Here you can visit the local distillery for a tasting session, and head to the official St Kilda viewpoint. If you’re feeling brave, why not go for a swim!

Day 5

Make the journey up to Berneray where you will take the ferry over to Leverburgh on the Isle of Harris. This is where you can spend the day on the white sands of Luskentyre and surrounding beaches, some of the most beautiful places on the trip. You can also visit the Harris distillery in Tarbert and spend the evening wandering the village.

You will eventually come back down into Stornoway, the capital of the Outer Hebrides, where you can spend the night in the town, and hopefully experience some local music!

Day 7

Spend your last morning in the town of Stornoway, visit the castle, and relax before catching the final ferry over to Ullapool, where you will be back on the mainland, and finished your island Hop adventure.
